Development of a grafting technology for cabbage 2019/05/28

Although grafting technique is commonly used for vegetable production, its application is generally limited to cucurbitaceous and solanaceous vegetables. Cabbage is an important vegetable that belongs to the Brassicaceae (Cruciferae) family and grafting technique is never been used for commercial production of cabbage. Through cooperation with the Council of Agriculture, we successfully developed a grafting technique for cabbage (Fig. 2) and establish the best healing conditions for grafted cabbage production. The graft technique developed in this study has the advantages of simple and rapid operation, a high grafting survival rate, good seedling quality and automation potential. Furthermore, we found that when combined with a specific rootstock, the head quality of grafted cabbage was better than that of ungrafted cabbage.
